Planning ahead

Thinking about divorce: how to know you are ready

Certainty is rare. Clarity is enough. Here is how to find it before you act.

Very few people feel sure the day they decide to divorce. Most feel tired, scared and relieved at once. You do not need certainty to take a careful next step. You need enough clarity to protect yourself and your children while you decide.

Signs people describe

  • The same conflict repeats and nothing changes after honest effort, including counseling.
  • You picture your future and your spouse is not in it, and that picture brings calm rather than fear.
  • You feel unsafe, controlled or watched. If so, read our safety guide first, because the order of your steps matters.
  • Your health, sleep or work is suffering in a way that has lasted months, not days.

What you can do before deciding

  1. Learn your state's rules. Residency, waiting periods and how property is divided shape every later choice.
  2. Get a clear picture of money. Know what you own, what you owe and where the statements live.
  3. Talk to one professional privately. A single hour with a family lawyer, mediator or financial analyst can answer the questions keeping you up at night.
  4. Consider counseling or discernment counseling. It is designed for couples where one person is leaning out.

Separation is also an option

Some states offer legal separation, which settles support and parenting without ending the marriage. Others do not recognize it at all. Your state guide says which applies to you.

Planning is not the same as filing. Nothing in this stage commits you to anything, and a plan made calmly is almost always cheaper than one made in a crisis.

This guide is general information, not legal advice. Laws differ by state and change over time. For advice about your situation, talk to a licensed attorney in your state.
