Planning ahead

The documents to gather before you file

Most delays trace back to a missing statement. Collect these once and you are ready for disclosures.

File folders neatly arranged on a shelf

Every state requires both spouses to share financial information. Gathering it early makes disclosures quick and gives you the facts you need to negotiate.

Income

  • Federal and state tax returns for the last three to five years, with all schedules.
  • Recent pay stubs, W-2s and 1099s. Bonus and commission records.
  • Business records if either of you is self-employed: profit and loss statements, business tax returns.

What you own

  • Bank and brokerage statements for every account, ideally the last 12 months.
  • Retirement statements: 401(k), 403(b), IRA, pension estimates.
  • Home deed, mortgage statement, recent appraisal or tax assessment.
  • Vehicle titles and loan statements. Valuable personal property with receipts or photos.
  • Records showing anything was owned before marriage, inherited or gifted.

What you owe

  • Credit card statements, personal loans, student loans, medical debt, tax debt.

Everything else

  • Health, life and auto insurance policies. Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements.

Upload each item into your KindSplit vault as you find it. Counsel reads what you add and tells you what is still missing.
